  BIOGRAPHY

Novacek first picked up a racquet at age 6, two years after he began playing ice hockey. Although no one in the family played tennis, Karel had a natural gift, turning pro in 1984. Novacek posted the most significant results of his career at the U.S. Open, where he reached the singles semifinals in 1994, and the doubles finals in 1993.

 
  CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
He played Davis Cup for his native Czech team in 1987, and '89 through '94, helping his team reach the quarterfinals five times in six years.
Novacek's best venue was the U.S. Open where he was a semifinalist in 1994, losing to Michael Stich, and doubles finalist in 1993 with Martin Damm, eventually losing to Ken Flach and Robert Seguso.
Karel achieved his highest rank in singles - No. 8 - in 1991. His pinnacle in doubles came at No. 25 in 1994.
During the course of his career, Novacek had wins over #1 ranked players including Boris Becker, John McEnroe, Pete Sampras, Mats Wilander and Thomas Muster.
