BIOGRAPHY

A fiercely competitive, all-court player, MaliVai Washington reveled in going head-to-head with the best players of his era. After finishing his sophomore year at the University of Michigan as the best college player in the country, Washington turned pro. In 1996, he reached the final at Wimbledon. In an espn.com interview, he said he enjoyed playing opponents where "I knew that even if I played my best, it might not be enough, that physically and mentally I had to be on my game...I loved playing Pete Sampras, even though every time we played, he whipped my butt.."

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

+In 1989, Washington won his first singles title in Seattle during his first year as a pro.

+His breakthrough year, 1992, saw Washington capture two Tour titles (Charlotte and Memphis) and was a finalist in four others.

+1n 1996, Washington battled through two five-setters to make it to the finals at Wimbledon, ultimately losing to Dutch Krajicek.
