August 20-23, 2009
International Tennis Hall of Fame
Newport, RI
Recap: In the only grass court event on the Outback Champions Series calendar, play kicked off in picturesque Newport, RI with Todd Martin continuing his undefeated run in champions tennis at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, defeating Wayne Ferreira of South Africa 7-5, 5-7, 10-6 (Champions Tie-Breaker) in the quarterfinals.
To the delight of fans, doubles matches were added and Australians, Mark Philippoussis and Pat Cash defeated the Swedish duo of Mikael Pernfors and Mats Wilander 6-4, 6-2. Play on day one was rounded out with 2008 finalist Jim Courier competing against fellow American Jimmy Arias. Newport top seed Courier won the contest 6-3, 7-6(3).
Day two opened as Mark Philippoussis took on Mikael Pernfors. Philippoussis, returning to the site of his last tournament triumph was victorious over Pernfors, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. In the second doubles match of the event, Courier and Ferreira defeated Martin and Arias 6-3, 6-4.
Defending champion and number two seed Pat Cash rounded out Friday’s play in a re-match of the 1988 Australian Open final, competing against Mats Wilander. Cash rallied from a 1-4 first set deficit to take out the match 7-5, 6-4.
On Day Three, the Semifinal matches heated up as Courier defeated former Davis Cup team mate Martin, 6-1, 3-6, 13-11(TB), earning a return trip to the Newport finals. Play then continued with doubles partners Arias and Ferreira defeating Wilander and Pernfors 6-4, 6-3.
The second Semifinal match included an interesting twist, as a former coach and player duo, Cash and Philippoussis, clashed. Cash defeated Philippoussis 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 (TB), to face Jim Courier in a rematch of the 2008 Newport finals.
On the last day of the event, Cash and Courier once again competed for the championship title on the grass in Newport. Courier was looking to avenge his 2008 loss, but Cash, often regarded as one of the best serve-and-volley players and grass court players in the last 30 years, successfully defended his title 6-3, 6-4. This win marked Cash’s first Outback Champions Series title of 2009.
The 3rd Place Match followed the trophy presentation with Martin and Philippoussis going head to head. Martin, who also captured the Newport title in 2007, emerged victorious, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-6 (TB).
We thank all of our fans who came out to support the event. The Outback Champions Series continues in Charlotte, North Carolina in September and in Surprise, Arizona in October.
