Playing on the historic grass courts at the International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino, the site of the first U.S. Championships (the modern day US Open) in 1881, Jim Courier, Pat Cash and Magnus Larsson all posted victories Wednesday on the opening day of play of the $150,000 Hall of Fame Champions Cup, the fourth of eight events on the 2008 Outback Champions Series. Jim Courier, a resident of New York, N.Y., defeated Mikael Pernfors of Sweden 7-6 (1), 6-4 while Pat Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion from Australia, defeated Karel Novacek of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-1. In the opening match of the day, Larsson, from Sweden, upset Wayne Ferreira of South Africa 6-2, 6-2.

Thursday’s match play was punctuated by the ejection of seven time Grand Slam champion John McEnroe. He won 6-3 to open the best of three match and was trailing 4-2 in the second set when the problems started and he became the first player defaulted in the three-year history of the Outback Champions Series senior tour. No other player has even been issued a warning under the Outback Series' point-penalty system, but McEnroe's latest on-court tirade took him through the four steps — warning, point, game and default — in a matter of minutes. This resulted in a 3-6, 6-2 victory for Washington.

One day after being defaulted from his opening round-robin match with MaliVai Washington, John McEnroe executed a near perfect display of serve-and-volley grass-court tennis – and impeccably good behavior – in a 6-3, 6-3 win Friday over Karel Novacek of the Czech Republic. McEnroe’s win elevated his round-robin record to 1-1 at the event, the fifth of eight tournaments on the 2008 Outback Champions Series. Also posting wins Friday were Magnus Larsson of Sweden, who defeated countryman Mikael Pernfors 6-1, 6-4, and Pat Cash of Australia, who defeated Washington 6-3, 6-2.

Pat Cash and Jim Courier advanced into the final of the Hall of Fame Champions Cup Saturday with victories on the final day of round-robin play. Cash defeated John McEnroe 6-7 (0), 6-2, 10-7 (Champions Tie-Breaker) while Courier defeated Wayne Ferreira 7-6 (0), 6-3. Both Cash and Courier won their respective round-robin groups with 3-0 records and will compete for a $54,000 first prize and 800 ranking points in Sunday's final.

Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon champion, used his noted serve- and- volley game to edge McEnroe and reach his first Outback Champions Series final since Naples, Fla., in 2006. McEnroe fought off two set points at 4-5 in the first set with a great serve volley combination followed up by an ace. In the tie-breaker, McEnroe won all seven points to take the first set. Cash broke McEnroe's serve in the fifth and seventh games of the second set to win the second set and force the 10-point "Champions Tie-breaker" played in lieu of a third set. Cash jumped off to a 5-0 lead in the deciding tie-breaker and held on for the 10-7 victory.

Playing on his favorite surface, Pat Cash won the singles title at the Hall of Fame Champions Cup Sunday defeating Jim Courier 6-3, 6-4 in the singles final, spoiling Courier’s 38th birthday. With the victory, Cash earned $54,000 and his first tournament victory on the Outback Champions Series.
